How It Works

Initial Consultation

Once we’ve connected and confirmed my availability for your wedding date, we’ll get together for a one hour initial consultation. The main goal of our time together is for you to see if I might be a good fit for the both of you, as your Marriage Commissioner. As we meet and get to know each other, I’ll walk you through the details of planning out your wedding - both the legal and artistic aspects of a ceremony. I’ll work hard with you to build a ceremony that reflects the vision that you have for your special day.

Booking Your Wedding

Once you feel comfortable with moving ahead together on the ceremony, a final quote will be given and a $50 deposit will secure your date in my calendar. The remainder of the balance owing is due on the day of the ceremony. Cancellations are fully refundable.

Fees can be paid by cash, cheque, or e-transfer: weddings@jonkramer.ca

Customized Ceremonies

For simple civil ceremonies, minimal customization is required. For formal weddings, I will work with you in the weeks leading up to your wedding to create a ceremony that suits you as a couple. I will prepare an initial draft of your ceremony to look over, and from there we can continue to alter the wedding until if feels “just right” to the both of you.

Marriage License

Three months before your scheduled wedding date, I’ll be in contact to remind you to apply for an Alberta marriage license. You must obtain one of these before you can get married in Alberta. Marriage licenses can be purchased at the registry agencies listed here:

Carefully read the requirements for your marriage license here:

Rehearsals

For formal weddings, while not required, I do recommend holding a rehearsal - usually on the day before. I would be happy to guide you and your wedding party through the ins and outs of the ceremony ($50 + travel) - or to give you some direction ahead of time, so that you can run through the rehearsal on your own. Either way, it’s important gather with the members of your wedding party at the venue, just so everyone knows where to walk, stand and to get a feeling for the flow of what will happen on your big day.

Your Wedding Day

I will arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of your wedding - then, once everyone is ready to go, I’ll guide you and your wedding party through all that we’ve planned. Upon the conclusion of the ceremony, I’ll make sure all documents are submitted to Service Alberta, Vital Statistics-Registries so that your marriage gets registered by them.
